Dapu error 25: Brake signal stuck on the controller

Dapu controller (used by Pedego, Batavus, Koga and other European brands)Fix at homeRide with caution

The Dapu controller has monitored the brake cut-off input and found it held in the active position for longer than two minutes. Because the controller cannot tell if you are actually pulling the brake, it disables motor assist as a safety measure. Walk assist and pedal assist both stop working, and the speed reading usually drops to zero until the fault clears.

Likely causes

How to fix Dapu error 25

  1. Power the bike off and remove the battery before any inspection.
  2. Squeeze and release each brake lever, checking that both return crisply without sticking.
  3. Inspect the cable housings for tight bends or kinks near the lever and the frame entry.
  4. With the battery still out, unplug each brake cut-off connector and check for green corrosion or moisture on the pins; clean with contact spray and let them dry fully.
  5. Reconnect, refit the battery and ride briefly to see if the code clears; if it returns, disconnect one brake at a time to identify which lever is signalling stuck.
  6. If the fault follows a specific lever, replace that brake lever assembly or the inner brake cable that operates it, as the magnetic switch inside is the part that has failed.
  7. Take the bike to an authorised dealer for diagnostic confirmation and replacement of the brake lever or the integrated cut-off switch if cleaning and cable adjustment do not resolve it.
Go to a dealer if: Take it to an authorised Dapu dealer if the code returns after cleaning the connectors and adjusting the cables, because the brake lever or its internal hall switch then needs to be replaced and programmed.
Warranty: A genuine brake cut-off switch or lever failure inside the usual two-year warranty window is normally treated as a manufacturing defect and covered, while crash damage, water ingress and normal wear on cables are excluded.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset dapu error 25?

Switch the system off, remove the battery for sixty seconds and refit it, then power on without touching either brake lever. If the brake signal is genuinely stuck the code will reappear within two minutes and the lever or cable still needs work.

Is it safe to keep riding with error 25?

The bike still rolls and brakes normally, but motor assist is cut off so hills and headwinds will be harder. Ride only on quiet roads to the next stop, because the lights and walk assist may also be disabled on some Dapu builds.

How much will this cost and is it under warranty?

A simple cable adjustment and connector clean is usually under €20 in parts, while a new brake lever with cut-off switch fitted by a dealer lands around €80 to €150. Where the lever has failed inside the two-year warranty period and there is no sign of crash or water damage, the dealer typically covers the part.
