Brose error 46: Motor Movement Signal Not Detected

Brose Drive (S, T, C - also used by Bulls, Rotwild, Fantic, BH, Trek Allant)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The motor control unit is no longer receiving valid rotor position or speed feedback from inside the motor, so the drive system cannot tell whether the motor is turning. As a result, pedal assist, walk assist and throttle functions are switched off, and the bike behaves like a normal bicycle until the fault clears. The display stays on but shows the error and the system will not provide power to the motor.

How to fix Brose error 46

  1. 1. Stop riding, dismount and switch the system off using the control panel button.
  2. 2. Wait at least 10 seconds, then power the system back on and check whether error 46 clears.
  3. 3. Switch off again, remove the battery and inspect the motor cable along the down tube for cuts, pinch marks or pulled connectors.
  4. 4. Unplug and reseat the motor connector at the motor housing, checking for bent pins, dirt or green corrosion on the contacts.
  5. 5. Reinstall the battery, switch on and test assist in a safe, flat area without riding into a junction.
  6. 6. If error 46 returns immediately or after a short ride, stop using the assist and contact your e-bike dealer for diagnostic and motor testing.
  7. 7. Do not open the motor casing yourself; internal sensor replacement requires a Brose service partner.
Go to a dealer if: Take the bike to a Brose service dealer if the error returns after a full power cycle and connector inspection, since the motor, internal sensor or controller then needs bench-level diagnostics.
Warranty: A genuine internal motor or sensor fault inside the two-year frame and drive warranty is normally covered, but cable damage from crashes, water ingress from pressure washing, or modified wiring are treated as wear or misuse and invoiced to the owner.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic typically runs 30 to 60 EUR; a motor cable or external connector repair 50 to 150 EUR; an internal sensor or full motor replacement 400 to 900 EUR depending on the Brose variant.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset brose error 46?

Yes, start with a full power cycle: switch the system off on the control panel, wait around 10 seconds, then switch it back on. If error 46 returns straight away or after a few pedal strokes, the fault is hardware-related and needs dealer diagnostics.

Is it safe to keep riding with error 46?

No. The motor assist, walk assist and any throttle function are disabled, so you will be riding a heavy e-bike under your own power with no support. Continued riding also risks leaving a recurring fault unrecorded in the system log, which can complicate a later warranty claim.

How much does fixing error 46 usually cost and is it under warranty?

Expect 30 to 60 EUR for a dealer diagnostic, 50 to 150 EUR if the fault is the external motor cable or connector, and 400 to 900 EUR if an internal sensor or the motor itself has to be replaced. An internal Brose component failure inside the standard two-year warranty period is usually covered, while crash, water or modification damage is not.
