VanMoof error 20: Sudden battery shutdown

VanMoof S3 / X3 (also S5 / A5 where applicable)Fix at homeRide with caution

The battery cut power without warning while the bike was on. On VanMoof this is usually a momentary loss of contact or a brief BMS trip after a bump, a pothole or a voltage dip under heavy load. The bike normally restarts and the code is logged in the app.

Likely causes

How to fix VanMoof error 20

  1. Switch the bike off and on again; if it comes back normally, charge it fully before the next ride
  2. Avoid Boost and hill starts on a battery below 20 percent or in freezing weather
  3. Check the app history: if error 20 only appears with a low battery, the pack is simply getting old
  4. Do a hard reset (10 to 15 seconds on the power button) and install any firmware update
  5. If shutdowns happen several times a week or at high charge levels, have an independent VanMoof-capable shop check the connectors and load-test the battery
Go to a dealer if: Go to a shop if the bike shuts down repeatedly at more than 30 percent charge, or if it will not restart after a shutdown.
Warranty: Batteries on pre-bankruptcy bikes are out of warranty in practice; only bikes bought from the relaunched VanMoof carry a current warranty, so budget for a paid repair.
Typical cost: Nothing if it is a one-off; a connector check is about EUR 50-100, and a worn pack that sags under load means EUR 350-900 for a refurbished or new battery.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Is error 20 serious?

A single occurrence is not. Frequent shutdowns mean either a loose connection or a tired battery, both of which get worse, so act before it strands you.

Why does my VanMoof switch off when I use Boost?

Boost pulls peak current. A cold or low battery cannot deliver it, the voltage dips, and the BMS cuts out. It is the classic error 20 pattern.

Can I keep riding after error 20?

Yes, with care: restart, ride gently, and charge. If it repeats on the same ride, walk it home rather than risk a cut-out in traffic.
