VanMoof error 0-15: Battery protection active (BMS cut-off)

VanMoof S3 / X3 (also S5 / A5 where applicable)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

Errors 0 to 15 all come from the battery management system (BMS) inside the frame-integrated battery. The BMS has tripped one of its protections: cell over- or under-voltage, over-current, short circuit, or a temperature limit. Until the BMS releases the lock the bike has no assist and often will not wake up at all.

Likely causes

How to fix VanMoof error 0-15

  1. Plug in the original VanMoof charger and leave it for at least 2 to 4 hours, even if the LED does not react at first; a deeply discharged pack sometimes wakes up
  2. Let the bike sit at room temperature for an hour if it was very cold or very hot, then try charging again
  3. Do a hard reset: hold the power button on the top tube for about 10 to 15 seconds until the matrix display goes dark, release, and switch on again
  4. Check the app for a pending firmware update and install it with the bike next to the phone and the charger connected
  5. If the code is 0, 1, 2 or 3 (voltage) and the pack still will not charge after a full night, stop trying; repeated forced charging can damage cells further
  6. Take the bike to an independent VanMoof-capable shop: they can read the BMS log, balance or reset the pack, or replace cell groups or the whole battery
Go to a dealer if: Go to a shop if the bike does not wake up after a full night on the original charger, or if the code returns within a few rides.
Warranty: Batteries on pre-bankruptcy bikes are out of warranty in practice; only bikes bought from the relaunched VanMoof carry a current warranty, so budget for a paid repair.
Typical cost: A BMS reset or diagnosis is roughly EUR 50-120; cell repair or a refurbished S3/X3 battery runs EUR 350-700, a new pack (when available) around EUR 700-900.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Which battery error is the worst?

Voltage errors after a long empty storage are the most common and often recoverable with patient charging; temperature and short-circuit errors that keep coming back usually mean cell damage.

Can I replace the VanMoof S3 battery myself?

The pack sits inside the down tube and is bolted and wired in; it is doable with tools but you also need a shop to pair or reset the BMS, so most owners let a workshop do it.

Will a third-party battery fix errors 0-15?

Only if it is a compatible pack that talks to the VanMoof BMS protocol; generic packs do not, and a shop can advise what actually works on your frame version.
