VanMoof error 16: Battery defect or connection problem
The main controller cannot get a valid response from the battery. Either the battery itself has failed or the wiring between battery and the electronics cartridge is broken or corroded. The bike usually shows no charge level and gives no assist.
Likely causes
- Corroded or loose battery connector inside the down tube (water ingress is common on S3/X3)
- Battery BMS crashed or latched in fault mode
- Broken wire in the harness between battery and the smart cartridge
- Battery fully dead after long storage so it cannot answer the controller
- Water damage on the battery PCB after pressure washing or a very wet winter
How to fix VanMoof error 16
- Charge the bike with the original charger for a few hours and see whether the error clears
- Hard reset: hold the top-tube power button 10 to 15 seconds until everything goes dark, then power up
- Check for water: if the bike was pressure washed or stood in the rain a lot, leave it indoors overnight to dry
- Update firmware via the app if an update is offered
- If the error stays, book an independent VanMoof-capable shop; they open the down tube, inspect the connector and harness, and test the battery on the bench
Warranty: Batteries on pre-bankruptcy bikes are out of warranty in practice; only bikes bought from the relaunched VanMoof carry a current warranty, so budget for a paid repair.
Typical cost: Cleaning and re-seating a corroded connector is around EUR 60-120; a harness repair EUR 80-180; a replacement or refurbished battery EUR 350-900.
Frequently asked
Is error 16 always a dead battery?
No. Roughly half the time it is the connector or harness, not the pack. A shop test on the bench tells the difference quickly.
Can I keep riding with error 16?
Usually not: without a valid battery link the controller refuses assist, and the bike is heavy to pedal unassisted.
Does error 16 happen on the S5 and A5?
The S5/A5 battery is different, but the same class of communication error exists and is handled the same way: charge, reset, then shop.
