The drive unit tried to write ride data such as trip distance, average speed and total kilometres to memory and the update failed. Motor assist continues to work normally, but the trip meter, odometer and average speed reading may freeze, jump or reset until the code clears. W207 shows on the display with the standard Shimano warning icon, not the red stop sign.

  1. Switch the system off using the battery power button, not the display power button, and wait at least 10 seconds.
  2. Power the system back on and check whether W207 has cleared on the display.
  3. Ride 200-500 metres and confirm the trip metre and odometer are incrementing again.
  4. Inspect the rear stay spoke magnet, clean it and confirm the speed sensor gap is 1-3 mm.
  5. Unplug, inspect and reseat the speed sensor connector at the drive unit.
  6. Run E-TUBE Project and apply any pending firmware updates for the battery, display and drive unit.
  7. If W207 returns on the next ride, take the bike to the place of purchase for dealer-level diagnostics.
Go to a dealer if: Book the bike in at the place of purchase if W207 returns after a full battery power cycle and the firmware is current, because drive unit or display memory faults require dealer diagnostics.
Warranty: Genuine component faults on Shimano STEPS parts inside the two-year warranty window are normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage, wear items and user modifications are excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic typically runs €40-€80, a replacement speed sensor €25-€60, and a warranty drive unit swap usually only costs the labour of €60-€120.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
