Yamaha / Giant reset: display, RideControl app and what needs the dealer

ResetsYamaha / Giant

Yamaha PW-series drives (PW, PW-SE, PW-ST, PW-X, PW-X2/X3, PW-S2) and Giant's SyncDrive versions of the same motors share one truth: the user can reset the display and the app, the dealer resets the drive. Giant's RideControl app adds settings profiles and firmware updates that most Yamaha-branded bikes do not have.

Warning: The Giant RideControl app 'Reset' restores assist tuning to Giant's defaults, including any dealer-tuned support levels; note them first. Removing the bike from your RideControl account is what a buyer needs, but it cannot be undone remotely. Yamaha and Giant total distance is stored in the drive unit; no user reset changes it. Error codes on the drive unit are cleared only with the Yamaha or Giant service tool.

What you need

Step by step

1. Soft reset: display off and on
Yamaha Display A / C / X and Giant RideControl ONE / Ergo: press the power button; wait 5 seconds; press again. Giant RideControl Dash / EVO: hold the power on the display. Switch on with the pedals free (Yamaha drives calibrate the torque sensor at start-up).
If OK: Warning or blinking gone; assists normally.
If not: Same error (Yamaha 'E' codes or Giant's blinking LED pattern) returns: power cycle.
2. Full power cycle: battery out
Switch off, unlock and remove the battery (down-tube Giant EnergyPak or rear-rack Yamaha pack). Wait 30 seconds. Refit until it clicks. Switch on with no weight on the pedals.
If OK: Clean boot.
If not: Error persists: active fault. Note the code / blink pattern and see the Yamaha or Giant error page. Continue only for display and app cleanup.
3. Display reset (Yamaha Display A / C / X, Giant RideControl ONE / Ergo)
Yamaha Display C/X: hold the function (mode) button to enter settings; items include units, clock, brightness and 'Trip reset'. Display A: hold the assist-mode button to reset the trip; no other settings. Giant RideControl ONE/Ergo: settings live in the app, the unit itself only resets trip via long press.
If OK: Trip zeroed, units and clock right.
If not: Display shows nothing or a fixed error even with a good battery: the display, its cable or the drive unit. No further user reset exists.
4. Giant RideControl app: reset settings
Open RideControl, connect to the bike (bike on, Bluetooth on the display or SyncDrive module). Settings › 'Reset to default' / 'Restore default settings' for support levels, walk assist, light behaviour. Confirm.
If OK: Tuning back to Giant stock; assist behaviour normal again.
If not: Behaviour unchanged: not a settings problem.
5. Giant RideControl app: unpair and re-pair
RideControl › My bikes › select bike › 'Remove bike' / 'Unpair'. Phone: Bluetooth › forget the bike. Restart the phone. Switch the bike on and add it again from RideControl (it scans for nearby Giant bikes).
If OK: Connected and syncing.
If not: RideControl says the bike belongs to another account: only the previous owner (remove bike in their app) or a Giant dealer can release it.
6. Giant RideControl app: firmware update
With the bike connected, RideControl › Firmware. Update the drive unit, display and battery when offered, battery above 50%.
If OK: Firmware current; some error behaviours are fixed by updates.
If not: Update fails: cable / module issue. Dealer.
7. Dealer: Yamaha or Giant service tool
The dealer uses the Yamaha diagnostic tool or Giant's service software to read the drive unit error history, clear it, check the battery's health and cycle count, and pair replacement components. Yamaha-branded bikes (Haibike, Giant older models, Winora, etc.) generally have no consumer app, so this is the only error memory access.
If OK: Log read, cause fixed, memory cleared.
If not: Dealer finds the fault active: component. Warranty or replacement, not a reset.

Frequently asked

Is there a factory reset for a Yamaha e-bike?

Not for the owner. Yamaha displays reset trip and basic settings; the drive unit's error memory and settings are only reachable with the dealer's diagnostic tool.

Can I reset the Giant odometer?

No. Total distance is stored in the SyncDrive unit. Only the trip counter resets.

The Giant RideControl app will not let me add my second-hand bike. Why?

It is still linked to the previous owner's account. Ask them to remove it in their RideControl app, or go to a Giant dealer with proof of purchase.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
