Throttle not working or stuck full-on: elimination

ThrottleHub-motor e-bikes

A dead throttle, a throttle that only works at the very end of travel, or one that makes the motor run by itself all come down to the same four suspects: the throttle's hall sensor, its wiring, a display setting, or the controller's throttle input. A multimeter on three wires answers it.

Warning: A throttle stuck 'on' can launch the bike. Test with the rear wheel in the air and be ready to kill the display. If the motor runs on its own, unplug the throttle immediately and do not ride until it is fixed.

What you need

LED patterns and what they mean

Throttle not at rest at power-on (signal above ~1.2V at start)
Throttle fault (signal out of range, open or shorted)
Throttle abnormal
Throttle or sensor fault
Throttle disabled in display setting, or throttle/wiring fault
Throttle signal stuck high: sensor, water in the throttle, or shorted wire

Step by step

1. Does pedal assist work?
Wheel in the air, display on, spin the cranks.
If OK: PAS runs the motor: battery, controller drive stage, halls and motor are fine. The fault is in the throttle path. Continue.
If not: Nothing works: use the hub-motor elimination flow first, this is not a throttle-only problem.
2. Display settings: throttle enabled?
Many displays have a parameter that disables the throttle, limits it to walk-assist speed, or only allows it above a PAS level (EU/UK legal modes). KT: parameters around C-group and 'throttle'/'6 km/h'. Bafang: 'Throttle' or 'Start mode' in the advanced menu. Some bikes ship with the throttle disabled in firmware for legal reasons.
If OK: Throttle enabled, no speed restriction. Continue.
If not: Throttle disabled or limited to 6 km/h: enable it if legal where you ride. If the firmware locks it, no wiring fix will help.
3. Supply voltage at the throttle plug
Back-probe the 3-pin throttle connector with the display on: red-black should read about 5V (some systems 4.3-5V).
If OK: 5V present. Continue.
If not: No 5V: controller's 5V rail is not reaching the throttle. Check the harness and connector pins. If the PAS plug also has no 5V, the controller is at fault.
4. Signal voltage: the 0.8-4.2 V test
Measure signal (usually green, white or yellow) to black. At rest: 0.8-1.0V. Twist slowly: it should rise smoothly, with no jumps or dropouts, to 3.6-4.2V at full. Release: back to 0.8-1.0V.
If OK: Rest ~0.9V, full ~4V, smooth in between: throttle is good. Continue to step 6.
If not: Stuck at 0V or 5V, no change, or jumps around: hall throttle is faulty (water, worn magnet, broken hall). Rest voltage above ~1.2V explains Bafang 04 at power-on. Replace the throttle.
5. Motor runs by itself or throttle stuck on
If the motor runs without touching the throttle: unplug the throttle. If the motor stops, the throttle signal was high (water inside, spring failed, or shorted wire). If the motor still runs with the throttle unplugged: controller throttle input has failed internally.
If OK: Motor stops with the throttle unplugged: replace the throttle and check the cable for chafe against the brake lever.
If not: Motor runs with the throttle unplugged: controller fault. Replace the controller; do not ride.
6. Wiring and connector
Follow the throttle wire to the harness. Look for pinch points at the handlebar, a cut from grips being fitted, water in the plug, or pins pushed back.
If OK: Intact. Continue.
If not: Repair or replace the throttle (comes with cable).
7. Swap test
Fit a known-good throttle of the same type (3-wire hall). Any 5V hall throttle works electrically; the connector may need adapting.
If OK: New throttle works: original was faulty. Done.
If not: New throttle also dead with correct 5V and a good signal: controller throttle input failed. Replace the controller.
8. Controller current limit and start mode
If the throttle works but the motor only crawls: check the display's throttle current limit or 'throttle start' mode (some limit throttle to level 1 unless PAS level is raised).
If OK: Full power on throttle: done.
If not: Adjust the parameter; if none exists, the controller has a fixed throttle map.

What you now know for sure

Frequently asked

What voltage should an e-bike throttle put out?

A 3-wire hall throttle runs on 5V and outputs roughly 0.8-1.0V at rest rising to about 3.6-4.2V at full twist. Anything outside that range, or a signal that does not move, means the throttle is faulty.

Why does my display show error 04 at power-on?

On Bafang displays 04 means the throttle signal is above its rest level when the bike starts. Either you were touching the throttle, or the throttle is not returning to rest (water, worn spring, or the hall sensor has drifted). Unplug it: if 04 disappears, replace the throttle.

Can I use a thumb throttle from a different brand?

Electrically yes, as long as it is a 5V hall throttle with three wires. You may need to swap the connector. Resistive (potentiometer) throttles from older scooters will not work.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
