What drive system does my Specialized e-bike use?

United StatesMTB, road, city

Specialized Turbo bikes use Specialized-branded motors built on Brose hardware, paired with Specialized's own displays such as the TCU, TCD-w and MasterMind units. The badge on the frame identifies the brand but does not by itself determine which error codes apply, because the motor version and display type together define the fault messages a rider sees. Errors and the recommended user actions are shown in the Specialized app, and some MasterMind displays also surface Check App prompts. The rider should identify the motor and display fitted before looking up a code.

How to check on your own bike

  1. Look at the motor housing and note the word Specialized together with a version number, such as 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 2.2 or an SL unit.
  2. Check which display is fitted: a TCU with red and blue LED bars, a TCD-w with short text messages, or a MasterMind T3, H3 or TCD with colour-coded messages and Check App prompts.
  3. Pair the bike with the Specialized app and confirm that it connects, because the app is where error entries and user actions are listed.
  4. Read the type plate or frame sticker and cross-check the motor and display entries against the invoice or spec sheet supplied with the bike.
  5. Record the motor version and display model together, since error codes are tied to this pairing rather than to the frame model alone.

A recall on this list does not mean your bike is affected: check the model and the production dates in the official notice. This list combines the EU Safety Gate, the European Commission rapid alert system, with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. A model can be sold under another name in another market, so always check the model and production dates in the official notice.

Frequently asked

Which motor does Specialized use?

Specialized Turbo bikes use Specialized-branded motors built on Brose hardware, in the versions 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 2.2 and the lighter SL units. The branding on the housing says Specialized rather than Brose, although the internal hardware is shared.

Does the Specialized badge on the frame decide which error codes apply?

No. The badge identifies the brand and frame family, but the motor version and the type of display fitted together define which error codes the rider can see and which user actions are suggested.

Where do Specialized error codes show up?

Errors are listed in the Specialized app, along with the user actions to take. On MasterMind T3, H3 and TCD displays a Check App prompt also appears on screen, while the TCU shows LED bar patterns and the TCD-w shows short text messages.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
