Ananda error 38: Controller lost communication with display
The Ananda controller has stopped receiving valid data from the display, or the display has stopped receiving replies from the controller. Because the drivetrain cannot confirm the rider's input is legitimate, pedal assist cuts out completely, the speed reading drops to zero and walk assist is disabled. The bike can still be pedalled unpowered, but the system will not deliver any motor support until the fault clears.

Likely causes
- Loose or partially seated connector between the display, controller and motor harness, often at the head tube or behind the battery cover
- Corroded pins from water ingress in the down tube wiring or controller plug
- Chafed or pinched cable where it bends at the head tube or under the top tube
- Failed controller PCB, usually after high mileage or a deep water crossing
- Display unit internal fault that stops it transmitting on the bus
How to fix Ananda error 38
- Power the bike off and remove the battery before touching any connector.
- Locate the controller (commonly behind the down tube cover or under the battery) and inspect each plug for green corrosion, bent pins or pushed-out terminals.
- Unplug every connector, spray lightly with contact cleaner, let it dry, and re-seat each one firmly until the locking tab clicks.
- Trace the display-to-controller cable along the frame and look for pinch points or chafed insulation, especially where the bar steers.
- Refit the battery, power the system on and check whether error 38 is still present.
- If the code reappears immediately, the controller must be replaced and the new unit matched to the system by a dealer.
Warranty: A genuine controller failure inside the two-year component warranty is normally covered at no cost, but water ingress, corrosion, crash damage and aftermarket wiring faults are excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic and connector inspection typically runs €30-60, with a replacement Ananda controller and labour usually €180-320 fitted depending on the bike model.
Frequently asked
Can I reset ananda error 38?
There is no hard reset that clears a communication fault; the code returns until the underlying wiring or controller problem is fixed. Powering the bike off and back on after reseating the connectors is worth trying, but a permanent fix requires either clean, secure plugs or a new controller.
Is it safe to keep riding with error 38?
No. Pedal assist, walk mode and the speed reading all switch off, so the bike behaves like an unpowered, heavy bicycle. Ride to a safe place, stop, and resolve the fault before the next trip.
Will the repair be covered under warranty?
An internal controller failure within the first two years is usually replaced free of charge, provided there is no sign of water damage, impact or unauthorised wiring. Out of warranty, expect €180-320 for the controller fitted.
