Ananda error 39: Battery voltage too low detected

Ananda controller (used by Pedego, Kalkhoff, many European and US brands)Fix at homeDo not keep riding

The controller has measured the battery voltage dropping below the safe operating range, so it disables the motor to protect the pack and the electronics. The display will show the assist level falling to nothing, the speed reading stuck at zero, and walk-assist refusing to engage. A genuinely flat battery is the usual cause, but a faulty battery management board or a failed voltage sensing circuit inside the controller can trigger the same code on a healthy pack.

Likely causes

How to fix Ananda error 39

  1. Stop riding, switch the system off, and remove the key from the display.
  2. Connect the charger and run a full charge cycle; confirm the charger LED turns green when full before testing again.
  3. Fit a known fully charged battery from another bike of the same system if one is available, then power on and read the display.
  4. Inspect the battery cradle contacts and main connector pins for dirt, corrosion, or bent pins, then clean and reseat firmly.
  5. Check any in-line fuse on the battery lead and replace if blown with the rated value.
  6. If the code clears with a charged pack, ride normally; if it returns immediately or a known good battery also fails, the voltage detection circuit is suspect.
  7. Book the bike with an authorised Ananda service centre for bench diagnostic, harness test, or controller replacement.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is required when a fully charged known-good battery still triggers the code, because the controller's voltage detection circuit has failed and needs bench testing or replacement.
Warranty: A genuine controller component fault within the standard two-year warranty period is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage, or a battery worn out through age and deep discharge cycles is treated as wear and excluded.
Typical cost: Expect EUR 60 to 120 for a diagnostic and connector or harness repair, rising to EUR 280 to 450 if the Ananda controller itself needs replacement including labour.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset ananda error 39?

Clearing the code without fixing the cause is not a fix; switch the system off, fully charge the battery or fit a known good pack, and the code clears on the next power-up if the voltage is back in range. If it returns immediately with a charged battery, the controller needs service rather than another reset.

Is it safe to keep riding with this error?

No. The controller has cut motor assist to protect the battery and continuing to ride with the pack below cutoff can permanently damage the cells. Switch off, walk the bike home or arrange transport, then charge or replace the battery before riding again.

What does repairing this fault cost?

A charge or connector clean costs only electricity, while a harness repair typically runs EUR 60 to 120. A failed controller replacement usually lands between EUR 280 and 450 including labour, and is covered under warranty for a genuine component fault within two years.
