Yamaha PW error 61: Motor overcurrent detected on drive unit phase
The drive unit controller has measured abnormal current on one of the three motor phases (U, V or W). The system shuts motor assist down completely to protect the electronics and the motor windings. Pedalling without assist is still possible, but walk assist, torque-based support and the speed-dependent behaviour are all unavailable.
| Drive system | Yamaha PW series (PW-X3, PW-S2, PW-ST, PWseries CE - also Giant SyncDrive) |
| Severity | Dealer needed |
| Keep riding? | Do not keep riding |
| Typical cost | Expect roughly €80–€150 for diagnostics and labour, €200–€450 for a replacement controller, or €600–€1200 for a complete drive unit assembly, depending on the PW model. |
Likely causes
- Internal failure of the motor controller board
- Short circuit or insulation breakdown inside the drive unit windings
- Damaged wiring between controller and motor phase leads
- Moisture or water ingress into the drive unit housing
- Corroded or loose phase connectors at the motor
- External impact or crash damage to the motor casing
How to fix Yamaha PW error 61
- Write down when the code appeared and under what load (hill, start-up, low speed).
- Switch the system off, wait 30 seconds, switch back on and confirm the code returns.
- Visually inspect the motor cable and any exposed connectors for chafing, kinks or corrosion.
- Check that the motor cable is fully seated at both ends; do not pull on the wires.
- Avoid further riding with assist and transport the bike to an authorised Yamaha dealer.
- Let the dealer run the official diagnostic tool to read the phase current data.
- Authorise the dealer to replace either the controller or the complete drive unit assembly as the diagnostic indicates.
Warranty: A genuine internal fault of the controller or drive unit within the typical two-year warranty period is normally covered; water ingress, crash damage and tampered components are treated as out of warranty.
Typical cost: Expect roughly €80–€150 for diagnostics and labour, €200–€450 for a replacement controller, or €600–€1200 for a complete drive unit assembly, depending on the PW model.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Yamaha error 61?
No. The official description states the system cannot return to normal even if the power is cycled, so a reset will not fix it. The code will return as soon as the controller again detects the abnormal phase current.
Is it safe to keep riding with error 61 showing?
No. Motor assist is cut and the controller is flagging an active electrical fault inside the drive system. Continued use risks further damage to the controller, the motor windings or the wiring loom.
How much will the repair cost and is it covered by warranty?
Out of warranty expect €200–€450 for a controller swap or €600–€1200 for a full drive unit assembly, plus €80–€150 in labour. If the bike is under two years old and there is no sign of water damage, impact or unauthorised work, Yamaha normally covers a genuine internal fault under warranty.
