Yamaha PW error 32: Torque sensor voltage out of range at standstill

Yamaha PW series (PW-X3, PW-S2, PW-ST, PWseries CE - also Giant SyncDrive)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The torque sensor at the bottom bracket is reporting a voltage outside its expected range while no force is applied to the pedals. The controller interprets this as an untrustworthy input and cuts motor assistance as a safety response. The bike still rolls on human power, walk assist is disabled, and the assist level selector has no effect until the fault is resolved.

Likely causes

How to fix Yamaha PW error 32

  1. Stop riding and switch off the system.
  2. Remove the battery and inspect the torque sensor connector at the motor for moisture, corrosion or pushed pins.
  3. Check the visible harness between the bottom bracket and controller for chafing, cuts or pinch marks.
  4. Refit the battery, switch the system on and observe whether the code clears on a fresh power cycle.
  5. If code 32 returns, ride without assistance to a Yamaha dealer or authorised service point.
  6. The dealer measures the no-load sensor voltage against specification, performs the reference voltage adjustment, and replaces the torque sensor or controller assembly if adjustment is not possible.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is required as soon as the code returns after a power cycle, because the reference voltage adjustment and any sensor or controller replacement must be done with the Yamaha diagnostic tool.
Warranty: A genuine component failure on the torque sensor or controller inside the standard two-year warranty window is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage and worn connectors are treated as owner-side issues and excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic and reference voltage adjustment typically runs €60-120, a torque sensor replacement €180-350, and a controller replacement €350-650 including labour.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset yamaha error 32?

Switching the system off and back on may clear the display briefly if the reading drifts back into range, but the controller re-checks the no-load voltage on the next start and the code usually returns. A permanent reset requires the Yamaha diagnostic tool at a dealer.

Is it safe to keep riding with this error?

No. With the torque sensor reading outside its calibrated no-load window the controller cuts motor assist, and it can shut assist down again mid-ride without warning. Pedal home without assistance or transport the bike to a workshop.

What does the repair cost and is it under warranty?

Diagnostic and reference adjustment usually costs €60-120, a torque sensor replacement €180-350, and a controller replacement €350-650 with labour. If the part failed without water or crash damage, Yamaha generally covers the repair inside the two-year warranty window.
