Yamaha PW error 35: Torque sensor voltage fault while riding

Yamaha PW series (PW-X3, PW-S2, PW-ST, PWseries CE - also Giant SyncDrive)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The motor controller detected the torque sensor signal voltage drifting outside its expected range while the bike was being ridden. As a result, the pedal assist cuts out and walk assist is disabled, so the bike behaves as if the motor is switched off. The display and lights usually keep working, but no power is delivered to the drivetrain until the fault is cleared.

Likely causes

How to fix Yamaha PW error 35

  1. Stop riding and switch off the system as soon as it is safe to do so.
  2. Remove the battery before any inspection of cables or connectors.
  3. Inspect the torque sensor wiring at the bottom bracket and along the down tube for chafing, cuts, or loose plugs, and reseat any connector found loose.
  4. Check the connector pins for green corrosion or dampness, and dry or clean them with contact cleaner if needed.
  5. Do not attempt to recalibrate the reference voltage yourself; this requires Yamaha diagnostic tooling and trained access.
  6. Take the bike to an authorised Yamaha dealer for reference voltage adjustment, sensor replacement, or controller replacement as indicated by diagnostics.
  7. After the repair, request a loaded test ride so the technician can confirm the code does not return under power.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is required because the reference voltage adjustment, sensor replacement, or controller replacement must be carried out with Yamaha diagnostic equipment by a trained technician.
Warranty: A genuine torque sensor or controller fault inside the two-year warranty period is normally covered by Yamaha, while water ingress, crash damage, and connectors left to corrode from poor maintenance are excluded.
Typical cost: Authorised dealer diagnostic and reference voltage adjustment typically costs €60 to €120, a torque sensor replacement €180 to €320 fitted, and a controller assembly €280 to €500 fitted.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset yamaha error 35?

No owner reset clears it. The controller only sets this code when it measures a voltage outside the allowed window, so the underlying sensor or wiring fault has to be repaired first. The code clears automatically after a dealer completes the adjustment or replacement procedure.

Is it safe to keep riding with error 35?

No. Pedal assist and walk assist cut out, so the bike becomes very hard to ride on hills and in traffic even though the brakes still work normally. Switch the system off and arrange transport to a dealer.

How much will the repair cost and is it under warranty?

If the sensor or controller has failed on its own within two years, Yamaha normally honours it as a warranty claim. Out of warranty, expect €60 to €120 for an adjustment, €180 to €320 for a sensor, or €280 to €500 for a controller, all fitted at an authorised dealer.
