VanMoof error 46: Motor over-current or over-temperature
The motor controller cut power because the motor was drawing too much current or got too hot. This is protective, not a defect, and appears after long Boost use, steep climbs, heavy loads or riding into a headwind in summer. The bike usually restarts once the motor cools.
Likely causes
- Long or repeated Boost on hills with a heavy rider or cargo
- Hot weather with the front hub in direct sun
- Brake dragging on the front wheel making the motor work harder
- Under-inflated tyres increasing rolling resistance
- Worn motor bearings or a partially failed winding (rare, but shows as frequent 46 on flat roads)
How to fix VanMoof error 46
- Stop, switch the bike off and let the front hub cool for 10 to 15 minutes; do not pour water on it
- Check the front brake is not rubbing and the tyres are at the recommended pressure
- Use Boost in short bursts rather than holding it on climbs
- Lower the power level in the app for long climbs or heavy loads
- If error 46 appears on flat roads, at low power or when the hub is barely warm, have an independent VanMoof-capable shop check the motor and controller
Warranty: Warranty from the original VanMoof B.V. died with the 2023 bankruptcy; the relaunched VanMoof (LAVOIE/McLaren Applied) only covers bikes sold by them after the relaunch, so most S3/X3 owners pay for repairs.
Typical cost: Nothing for a genuine thermal cut-out; a motor or controller check is about EUR 50-100, motor replacement EUR 300-600 if it is actually failing.
Frequently asked
How hot does a VanMoof motor get?
Hot enough to trip protection on long climbs in summer. That is designed behaviour. Regular cut-outs in normal riding are not.
Is Boost bad for the motor?
No, but continuous Boost on a heavy bike up a long hill will hit the limit. Short bursts are what it was designed for.
Can a dragging brake cause error 46?
Yes. A rubbing front disc makes the motor work constantly. Spin the front wheel by hand and listen.
