Shimano STEPS error E934: Display loses link to drive unit

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)Dealer neededRide with caution

The cycle computer has stopped talking to the drive unit over the wired link that runs from the display down the frame to the motor. With that link broken the system cuts motor assist, walk assist is unavailable and speed/distance readouts may drop to zero or freeze. Lights powered from the main battery can still work, but the bike otherwise behaves like a heavy unpowered bicycle until the fault clears. It is a detected fault, not a calibration issue, so a power cycle alone rarely holds.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E934

  1. Power the system off, wait ten seconds, then switch back on to rule out a transient glitch.
  2. Remove the display from its mount and reseat it so the contacts sit fully home.
  3. Trace the display cable along the down tube and check for kinks, cuts, zip-tire rub or crushed sections near the head tube and bottom bracket.
  4. Unplug the connectors at both ends, inspect pins for green corrosion, bent contacts or moisture, then reconnect dry and clean.
  5. If a known-good compatible display is available, fit it briefly to confirm whether the display or the harness is at fault.
  6. Take the bike to a Shimano dealer for a continuity test on the harness and a diagnostic read on the drive unit if the code returns.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is required when the error returns after the connectors and cable have been checked, because that points to an internal drive unit or display board fault that needs the Shimano diagnostic tool.
Warranty: A genuine component fault inside the usual two-year frame is normally covered, while damage from water ingress, crash impact, cable abuse or unauthorised modification is treated as wear and excluded.
Typical cost: Expect roughly €40–€120 for harness or connector repair, €60–€100 for dealer diagnostics, and €400–€900 if the drive unit electronics board has to be replaced.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error E934?

A full power off and on will clear a temporary wiring glitch, but a real communication fault returns as soon as the system boots. Reseating the display and checking the harness plug are the only realistic owner-level resets.

Is it safe to keep riding with this code?

Riding is possible but the motor will not assist and walk assist is dead, so hills become hard work and readings may be wrong. Have it checked before relying on the bike for commuting or loaded trips.

How much will the repair cost and is it a warranty job?

A simple harness or connector fix usually lands at €40–€120 and is the most common outcome, which Shimano generally covers inside the warranty window. A drive unit board replacement pushes costs towards €400–€900 and water or crash damage would not be covered.
