Shimano STEPS error E024: Battery overcurrent protection triggered

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The battery management circuit has detected an overcurrent condition and shut down output to protect the cells and drive unit, which the system logs as a communication error between battery and drive unit. Motor assist is cut, walk assist is disabled, and the speed display may drop to zero. The bike will still switch on and lights will work, but no propulsion is available until the fault clears.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E024

  1. Switch the display off and remove the key if fitted.
  2. Hold the battery power button for at least five seconds to fully power down, then press it again to wake the pack.
  3. Take the battery out and wipe the contact pins on both the pack and the frame cradle with a dry, lint-free cloth.
  4. Reseat the battery until it clicks and locks, then power the system on and check the display.
  5. Ride a short distance on a flat surface to confirm the code has cleared.
  6. If E024 returns immediately or within a few minutes, stop riding and take the bike to an authorised Shimano dealer for diagnostic.
  7. Do not attempt to open the battery or motor yourself; the dealer will run a system diagnostic and check the wiring and component compatibility.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is needed when the code returns after a clean reseat and power cycle, because persistent overcurrent or communication faults point to a wiring, connector, or internal battery fault that requires diagnostic hardware.
Warranty: A genuine Shimano battery or drive unit failure inside the standard two-year warranty period is normally covered as a manufacturing defect, while water ingress, crash damage, and use of non-approved batteries are excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic typically runs 40 to 80 EUR; cleaning and reseating is often free if done at the point of sale, a replacement wiring harness 60 to 150 EUR, and a new genuine Shimano battery 550 to 900 EUR fitted.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset Shimano error E024?

Yes, in most cases. Turn the system off, hold the battery power button for five seconds to fully discharge the control board, then power the pack back on with the battery firmly seated. If the code reappears within a minute, the reset has not held and the bike needs dealer attention.

Is it safe to keep riding with E024?

No. Motor assist is disabled, so on hills or in traffic the bike behaves like an unpowered bicycle with the added weight of the system. Continuing to ride does not cause further damage, but the loss of assist can be a safety hazard on gradients.

How much will the repair cost and is it under warranty?

If the battery or drive unit is diagnosed as faulty within two years of purchase, Shimano typically covers the part under warranty and you pay only labour of around 40 to 80 EUR. Out of warranty, expect 550 to 900 EUR for a genuine replacement battery plus fitting.
