Shimano STEPS error E916: Drive unit internal fault

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The motor controller has detected an internal abnormality inside the drive unit itself. As a result the system disables electrical assist and walk assist, leaving the bike rideable only as an unpowered bicycle. The code will not clear on its own while the fault is active and is logged in the system memory.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E916

  1. 1. Power the system off using the battery power button, wait at least 30 seconds, then power it back on.
  2. 2. Check the battery charge level and confirm the battery is properly seated on its mount.
  3. 3. Inspect the motor cable connector at the drive unit for dirt, moisture or bent pins; clean and reseat if accessible.
  4. 4. Charge the battery to full and run a short test ride to see if the code returns.
  5. 5. If the code persists after two power cycles, do not attempt further resets and book a diagnostic at a Shimano service dealer.
  6. 6. Authorised dealer connects E-Tube Project to read the full fault log, reflash firmware if needed, and replace the drive unit if the hardware is at fault.
  7. 7. If the drive unit is replaced, the dealer must pair and write the serial number to the system before riding.
Go to a dealer if: A dealer is required as soon as a power cycle fails to clear the code, because the drive unit itself must be diagnosed with E-Tube Project and may need replacement.
Warranty: Under Shimano's two-year warranty on STEPS components an internal drive unit fault on a genuine, unmodified system is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage and unauthorised opening are treated as out of warranty.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostics typically run €40 to €100, firmware work around €30 to €60, and a replacement drive unit fitted €450 to €900 depending on the STEPS model.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error E916?

Yes, you can attempt one or two full power cycles using the battery power button. If the code returns or stays lit after the restart, the drive unit needs dealer-level diagnostics and a power-cycle reset will not fix it.

Is it safe to keep riding with E916?

No. Electrical assist and walk assist are switched off and the fault indicates an internal motor problem that can worsen. Ride only the shortest distance on flat ground without power to reach a workshop or your home, then stop using the bike.

How much will the repair cost and is it under warranty?

Expect €40 to €100 for diagnostics and €450 to €900 if a drive unit replacement is needed, depending on the STEPS generation. On a bike under two years old with a genuine, unmodified system the drive unit itself is usually covered by Shimano, with labour paid by the owner.
