Shimano STEPS error E030: Shifting unit does not match system configuration

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)Dealer neededRide with caution

The drive unit has detected that the shifter (or rear derailleur / automatic shifting unit) currently connected does not match the component the system was originally configured for in E-TUBE PROJECT. As a safety check the assist function is disabled and the bike will not power the motor until the mismatch is resolved. Walk assist is also unavailable. The display continues to show the error until the configuration is corrected or the correct shifting unit is fitted.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error E030

  1. Stop riding and switch the system off; do not attempt further power cycles until the cause is identified.
  2. Inspect the shifter / shifting unit connector at the junction box for moisture, dirt or a half-fitted plug, then refit firmly.
  3. Confirm the part number printed on the shifter or shifting unit matches the model listed in the bike's original spec sheet.
  4. If a different shifter has been fitted recently, swap it back for the original unit the system was configured for.
  5. Power the bike back on and check whether the error clears; if it does not, the E-TUBE PROJECT configuration itself is wrong.
  6. Take the bike to an authorised Shimano dealer so they can read the system with E-TUBE PROJECT and either reflash the configuration to match the fitted shifter or restore the configuration to its original state.
Go to a dealer if: A Shimano dealer is required as soon as the error persists after the correct shifter is confirmed fitted, because correcting or re-flashing the system configuration in E-TUBE PROJECT needs their diagnostic tool.
Warranty: If the shifting unit is a genuine Shimano part that has failed inside the two-year component warranty the replacement and the E-TUBE PROJECT reconfiguration are normally covered; crashes, water damage and swapping in non-original parts are not.
Typical cost: Expect roughly EUR 40 to 90 for dealer diagnosis and E-TUBE PROJECT reconfiguration, with a genuine Shimano shifter costing EUR 80 to 220 fitted if the unit itself must be replaced.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error E030?

Holding the power button or removing the battery will not clear E030, because the error is stored against the system configuration, not a transient fault. The code stays until either the original shifter is refitted or the dealer rewrites the configuration in E-TUBE PROJECT.

Is it safe to keep riding with E030?

The motor assist is switched off, so the bike rides like a heavy unpowered bicycle, which is inconvenient but not dangerous on the flat. Avoid steep climbs and do not rely on walk assist, as it is disabled while the code is active.

How much will fixing E030 cost and is it under warranty?

A dealer configuration flash typically runs EUR 40 to 90, while a replacement genuine shifter adds EUR 80 to 220 fitted. Warranty covers a genuine Shimano component fault inside the warranty period, but it does not cover a mismatch caused by fitting a non-original or wrong-model shifting unit.
