Specialized Turbo reset: TCU, Mastermind and Mission Control

ResetsSpecialized Turbo (TCU/Mastermind, Mission Control)

Specialized Turbo bikes (Levo, Vado, Como, Kenevo, Creo, Tero) use a TCU (Turbo Connect Unit) in the top tube, since 2021 the Mastermind TCU with a screen, and the Mission Control app. The TCU holds settings and the error log; Mission Control reads it. A TCU reset is a user job; clearing the drive unit error memory and releasing a System Lock are dealer jobs.

Warning: A Mastermind factory reset wipes ride tune, custom modes, the display layout, Bluetooth pairings and the System Lock PIN. If you do not know the System Lock PIN on a second-hand bike, a reset does NOT remove it: only a Specialized dealer can. Total distance is stored in the motor/TCU and survives a reset. Error codes (drive unit, battery, TCU) are diagnosed in Mission Control but cleared only by the dealer.

What you need

Step by step

1. Soft reset: TCU off and on
Press the power button on the TCU (top tube) once to switch off. Wait 10 seconds. Press again.
If OK: Error indication (red LED pattern or Mastermind message) gone.
If not: Same error: power cycle.
2. Full power cycle: battery out
Switch off. Remove the battery (Levo/Kenevo: unbolt the cover and slide the battery out; Vado/Como: unlock and lift; Creo/SL models: the SL battery is internal, so the TCU long-press is your only option). Wait 30 seconds. Refit. Switch on.
If OK: Clean boot.
If not: Persistent code: Mission Control › Diagnose shows the code and the component. Go to the Specialized error page for that code.
3. TCU restart via long press
Hold the TCU power button for about 10 seconds until the LEDs go out; release; press again to boot. On the Mastermind: Settings › System › 'Restart'.
If OK: TCU reboots, Bluetooth advertising resumes.
If not: TCU dead with a charged battery: TCU cable or the TCU. Dealer.
4. Unpair and re-pair Mission Control
Mission Control › Settings › My Bikes › forget the bike. Phone: Bluetooth › forget 'TCU ...' / the bike name. Restart the phone. Bike on, Mission Control › add bike › enter the 6-digit pairing code from the TCU sticker (or the Mastermind screen).
If OK: Connected; tune and diagnose work.
If not: Pairing code unknown: a dealer can read it. Do not factory reset for this, it does not change the code.
5. Mastermind: reset settings / factory reset
Mastermind TCU: Settings › System › 'Reset' (settings only) or 'Factory reset' (everything, including pairings and System Lock PIN if it is yours). Confirm with the buttons. Then set up units, display pages and re-pair Mission Control.
If OK: Odd display behaviour or a stuck custom mode gone.
If not: System Lock still active with an unknown PIN: it was set by the previous owner. Dealer with proof of purchase.
6. Mission Control: restore tune to default
Mission Control › Tune › 'Reset to default' for support, peak power and shuttle, per mode. Also 'Smart Control' off if the bike feels throttled.
If OK: Assist as delivered.
If not: Unchanged: not a tune issue.
7. Dealer: diagnostic tool, error memory, System Lock release, firmware
The dealer's Specialized tool reads the drive unit, battery and TCU error logs with timestamps, clears them after repair, releases a System Lock with proof of ownership, updates firmware and pairs replacement components.
If OK: Log read, cause fixed, lock released.
If not: Active fault: component replacement under warranty. Not a reset.

Frequently asked

How do I factory reset a Specialized Mastermind TCU?

Settings › System › 'Factory reset' on the Mastermind screen. It wipes settings, pairings and a System Lock you set yourself. It does not remove a previous owner's lock and it does not clear the odometer.

Where is the Specialized TCU pairing code?

On a sticker on the TCU (under the cover on older bikes) and in the bike's paperwork; Mastermind TCUs can show it on screen. A dealer can read it if it is lost.

Can Mission Control clear error codes?

It shows them under Diagnose. Clearing is a dealer function, and clearing does not repair anything.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.
