Bosch error 0x5A1004: Internal drive unit software fault
The motor control electronics inside the drive unit have flagged an internal software fault. The display usually shows the fault with a warning symbol and the assistance cuts out or refuses to start. Power delivery, walk assist and the speed reading all behave as if the system is locked. The bike is still rideable as a normal unpowered bicycle, but with no motor support.

Likely causes
- Corrupted or interrupted firmware from a failed over-the-air or dealer update
- Software version mismatch between display, battery and drive unit after a partial update
- Brown-out or voltage drop during operation that upset the internal controller
- Moisture ingress into the drive unit housing disturbing the control board
- Internal component fault on the motor controller PCB
- Battery management firmware out of sync with the drive unit
How to fix Bosch error 0x5A1004
- 1. Power the system off, remove the battery, wait 60 seconds and refit it, then switch on to see if the code clears.
- 3. Open the eBike Flow app (or have a dealer do it via DiagnosticTool) and check whether a software update is available for the drive unit, display and battery.
- 5. Carry out the update with the battery at least 50 percent charged and do not switch the system off during the flash.
- 7. If the code still appears, perform a full re-flash of the drive unit using the Bosch DiagnosticTool at a dealer.
- 9. Ask the dealer to read the full fault memory and run the guided test routine for the drive unit.
- 11. If re-flashing does not clear the fault, the drive unit itself is suspect and the dealer will arrange replacement under warranty assessment.
Warranty: An internal software or controller fault on the drive unit inside the standard two-year warranty period is normally treated as a manufacturer defect, while water ingress, crash damage and modifications are not covered.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic and software re-flash typically run 60 to 150 EUR, while a complete drive unit replacement if needed is in the range of 600 to 1100 EUR plus fitting.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Bosch error 0x5A1004?
A simple power cycle with the battery removed will sometimes clear a transient software flag. If the code returns, a proper re-flash through the eBike Flow app or Bosch DiagnosticTool is required, and that needs a dealer.
Is it safe to keep riding with this code?
No, because motor support is cut or unreliable and the bike may drop into a safe-mode shutoff mid-journey. You can roll it home unpowered, but it should not be ridden in traffic until the fault is cleared.
How much will the repair cost and is it under warranty?
A dealer re-flash usually costs 60 to 150 EUR, and a full drive unit replacement if the PCB is faulty runs 600 to 1100 EUR. On a bike less than two years old with no water or crash damage, the work is generally covered by the Bosch warranty.
