Bosch error 0x550359: Short circuit detected on on-board computer
The drive electronics have measured a short circuit involving the on-board computer, the display unit mounted on the handlebar. Power to the computer is cut to protect the rest of the system, so the display goes blank or shows the fault and motor assist is switched off. The bike will still roll, but without any pedalling support until the fault is cleared.

Likely causes
- Moisture or corrosion in the on-board computer holder contacts
- Damaged or chafed cable between the computer mount and the drive unit
- Bent, pushed-in or contaminated pins in the display connector
- Internal PCB failure inside the on-board computer itself
- Liquid ingress after washing or riding in heavy rain
- Aftermarket cable routing that pinches the computer harness
- Cracked solder joint on the holder from a handlebar impact
How to fix Bosch error 0x550359
- Switch the e-bike off and remove the on-board computer from its holder.
- Inspect the metal contacts on the back of the computer and inside the holder for dirt, verdigris, water marks or bent pins.
- Clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, allow to dry fully, then refit the computer firmly in the holder.
- Power the system on and check whether the code clears and the display returns normally.
- If the code returns, trace the cable from the holder down the stem and into the frame for kinks, crushed sections or signs of chafing.
- Do not cut, splice or re-pin the harness yourself; the fault then needs to be read by diagnostic tooling at an authorised Bosch dealer.
Warranty: A short circuit caused by an internal Bosch component fault inside the two-year warranty period is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage and aftermarket tampering are treated as wear and charged to the owner.
Typical cost: Expect roughly €40-120 for a dealer diagnostic and harness repair, €180-400 for a replacement on-board computer including fitting, and €250-500 if the holder and cable loom have to be replaced as a unit.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Bosch error 0x550359?
Switch off the system, remove the on-board computer, clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol, refit it firmly and power up again. If the hex code reappears, a Bosch diagnostic tool is required to clear it and the underlying short has to be repaired first.
Is it safe to keep riding with this error?
No. The system has cut motor assist as a protective measure, the display may fail mid-ride, and any short circuit left in the harness can damage the drive unit. Push the bike home or arrange a pickup rather than riding it.
How much will the repair cost and is it a warranty job?
A diagnostic and harness repair runs around €40-120, a replacement on-board computer about €180-400 fitted, and the holder loom €250-500. If the short is an internal Bosch fault under two years old the dealer usually logs it as a warranty claim; moisture damage or impact damage is normally paid by the rider.
