The controller is not getting a usable speed or position signal from the motor's Hall sensors. Without it the motor either does not start, starts roughly, or the speed reading on the display is wrong. Assist is usually reduced or cut.
Likely causes
- Hall sensor wire broken in the motor cable, typically at the fork
- Hall sensor failed inside the hub
- Water and corrosion in the motor connector
- Magnet ring in the hub damaged or dislodged
- Controller input fault
How to fix VanMoof error 48
- Power cycle the bike and roll it forwards a few metres before applying power
- Turn the handlebars fully both ways with the bike on; if the code toggles, the cable in the steerer is the fault
- Inspect the motor connector at the hub for corrosion
- Install any pending firmware update
- If the code stays, an independent VanMoof-capable shop can test the Hall signals directly and replace the cable, sensor board or motor
