Shimano STEPS error W205: Sensor initialization failed on start-up

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)WarningRide with caution

When the system is switched on it runs a calibration check on the pedal torque and cadence sensors; W205 means that check did not finish cleanly. While the warning is active the motor usually cuts assistance, walk assist is disabled, and the speed display may read zero or freeze. The bike itself still rides as a normal unpowered bicycle until power is restored.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error W205

  1. Switch the system fully off and remove any weight from the pedals and cranks for several seconds.
  2. Power the bike back on with no pressure on the pedals, following the official restart procedure.
  3. If W205 clears, ride normally and confirm assist returns across all support modes.
  4. Check the battery is fully clicked into its mount and the connector pins are clean and dry.
  5. Inspect the crank magnet ring and cadence sensor pickup for mud, debris, looseness or impact damage.
  6. Clean and dry the area around the bottom bracket and re-test; do not spray water directly at the sensor.
  7. If W205 returns after a clean no-load restart, record the code and mileage, then take the bike to an authorised Shimano dealer for E-Tube Project diagnostics on the torque sensor circuit.
Go to a dealer if: Book a dealer if W205 returns after a clean no-load restart and basic cleaning, because the torque sensor, its harness or the drive unit must be tested with E-Tube Project diagnostics.
Warranty: A genuine Shimano STEPS sensor or drive unit fault inside the two-year warranty period is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage, worn consumables and tampered units are excluded.
Typical cost: Dealer diagnostic typically runs EUR 30-60, a torque or cadence sensor replacement EUR 80-180 parts and labour, and a full drive unit replacement EUR 500-900 fitted.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error W205?

Yes, in most cases it clears with a clean restart. Switch the system off, take all weight off the pedals and cranks, wait a few seconds, then power on again with no load. If W205 comes straight back the sensor needs workshop diagnostics rather than another reset.

Is it safe to keep riding with W205?

The bike still rolls and brakes normally without motor assist, so a short cautious ride home or to a workshop is acceptable. Riding further with assist cutting in and out is not advisable because it hides the underlying sensor fault and can leave you stranded.

How much does it cost to fix and is it under warranty?

Expect EUR 30-60 for a dealer diagnostic and EUR 80-180 for a torque or cadence sensor replacement including labour. A genuine Shimano sensor or drive unit failure inside the two-year warranty is usually covered, but water damage, crash damage and worn parts are not.
