Shimano STEPS error W010: Drive unit overheat warning
The drive unit has detected an internal temperature above its safe operating range. Motor assist is automatically cut off or reduced to protect the electronics, and walk assist is usually disabled while the warning remains active. The display keeps showing W010 until the unit has cooled back to a normal temperature. Speed and battery readings continue to function normally; only the assist is limited.

Likely causes
- Sustained high assist on long or steep climbs with a heavy load.
- Blocked motor housing vents from mud, debris, or a tight aftermarket cover.
- Ambient temperature above 35 °C combined with low-speed, high-torque riding.
- Aged or degraded thermal paste between the motor stator and housing.
- Battery or controller firmware mismatch that prevents efficient heat management.
- Internal motor winding fault causing excessive current draw and self-heating.
How to fix Shimano STEPS error W010
- 1. Stop pedalling under power and shift to a low or easy gear.
- 2. Switch the system off and let the bike rest in shade for 15–30 minutes.
- 3. Clean any mud or debris from around the drive unit shell and bottom-bracket area.
- 4. Check that the motor cover and crank-area vents are not packed with dirt or pressed by accessories.
- 5. Power the system back on after cooling; confirm W010 has cleared before riding again.
- 6. If W010 returns within minutes of riding, or appears on a cold day with no load, stop use and book a dealer diagnostic.
- 7. Dealer checks thermal sensor calibration, firmware version, and internal winding resistance with the Shimano diagnostic tool.
Warranty: A genuine thermal sensor or drive unit fault inside the two-year warranty window is normally covered, while damage from crash impact, water ingress, or blocked cooling vents caused by neglect is treated as wear and excluded.
Typical cost: Diagnostic fees run €40–€80, drive unit thermal sensor replacement €90–€180 including labour, and a full drive unit replacement under or out of warranty typically costs €600–€1100 fitted.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Shimano error W010?
There is no manual reset. Switch the system off, let the drive unit cool for 15–30 minutes, then power on again. If W010 returns straight away the warning is flagging a real fault and needs dealer diagnostics.
Is it safe to keep riding with W010?
You can pedal the bike unpowered without issue, but motor assist and walk mode are cut off while the warning is active. Continuing to load the motor while it is hot can damage the windings and turn a warning into a permanent error.
Will Shimano fix W010 under warranty?
If a genuine thermal sensor or internal motor fault is confirmed and the bike is within two years from purchase, Shimano covers the repair or replacement. Damage from blocked vents, submersion, or crash impact is treated as owner fault and charged at the rates above.
