Shimano STEPS error E295: Abnormal speed sensor signal
The drive unit has detected an irregular or missing signal from the wheel speed sensor, so it no longer trusts the wheel-speed input it uses to control assist. As a result the motor cuts power, the displayed speed reads zero or freezes, and walk assist stops working because the system cannot confirm the wheel is turning. The bike can still be pedalled unpowered, but no assistance will be available until the fault is cleared.

| Severity | Dealer needed |
| Keep riding? | Ride with caution |
| Typical cost | Expect roughly €30-€70 for a replacement speed sensor and €40-€80 for dealer labour to fit and re-flash, rising to about €150-€260 if the harness or drive unit input has to be replaced. |
Likely causes
- Spoke magnet missing, loose, or sitting more than a few mm from the dropout-mounted pickup
- Cracked, demagnetised, or dirty magnet on the wheel
- Damaged, chafed, or unplugged speed sensor cable at the dropout connector
- Corrosion or water ingress in the speed sensor connector or harness
- Aftermarket tuning dongle or speed-limiter device fitted to the drive unit or cabling
- Failed speed sensor element inside the pickup
How to fix Shimano STEPS error E295
- Locate the speed sensor on the left rear dropout and the small magnet on the adjacent spoke.
- Spin the wheel by hand and confirm the magnet sweeps within about 3-5 mm of the sensor tip on each revolution.
- Realign the magnet or slide the sensor in its mount until the gap is correct, then re-tighten the fixing bolt.
- Unplug the sensor connector at the dropout, inspect the pins for green corrosion or bent contacts, dry and replug it firmly.
- Trace the sensor cable along the chainstay for chafing or pinch damage and replace the cable if the sheath is cut.
- Remove any third-party tuning chip or dongle from the motor area or wiring harness, as these are a known cause.
- If the magnet, gap, cable, and connector all check out, the sensor itself has likely failed and a Shimano dealer should diagnose or replace it.
Warranty: A genuine Shimano speed sensor or harness failure inside the standard two-year component warranty is normally covered, while crash damage, water ingress, magnet loss, and any aftermarket tuning devices are treated as non-warranty.
Typical cost: Expect roughly €30-€70 for a replacement speed sensor and €40-€80 for dealer labour to fit and re-flash, rising to about €150-€260 if the harness or drive unit input has to be replaced.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Shimano error E295?
There is no user reset button for E295. The code may disappear after turning the system off and on again, but if the speed signal fault is still present it will return as soon as you ride. Fix the underlying cause first and the code will clear on its own.
Is it safe to keep riding with E295?
The motor assist will cut out and walk assist will not work, so the bike still rolls under your own pedalling but with no power. It is fine to ride home carefully, but get it diagnosed soon rather than commuting on it day after day with no assist.
Will Shimano cover E295 under warranty?
If the speed sensor or its wiring fails for no external reason within the two-year component warranty, Shimano generally honours the repair. Magnet loss, crash damage, water damage, and any tuning dongle fitted to the bike usually take it out of warranty.
