Yamaha PW/PW-X batteries and Giant EnergyPak / EnergyPak Smart: elimination flow
Yamaha-branded packs and Giant EnergyPaks share the same drive platform but use different chargers and LED layouts. This flow tells a sleeping or cold pack from a charger fault, a contact problem, an unrecognised pack and a BMS failure.
What you need
- the original charger (Yamaha 2A/4A charger, or the Giant EnergyPak charger; the Giant Smart charger for EnergyPak Smart)
- the battery key
- the display (Yamaha LCD-A/LCD-X/Interface X, Giant RideControl Evo/ONE/Ergo) or the Giant RideControl app for EnergyPak Smart
- a dry cloth
LED patterns and what they mean
| Yamaha pack: press the button, 1 to 4 LEDs light | Normal. Each LED about 25% charge. |
| Giant EnergyPak / EnergyPak Smart: press the button, 1 to 5 LEDs light | Normal. Each LED about 20% charge. |
| Press the button: no LED | Sleep, deep-discharge protection or BMS shut down. Go to the charger step. |
| Charging: LEDs fill progressively, the current one blinking; charger LED steady red/orange (Yamaha) or steady (Giant) | Normal charging. |
| Charging: all pack LEDs blink together | Charge refused: temperature outside 0 to 40 C, or BMS fault. Warm up, retry; if it persists, BMS. |
| Charging: charger LED blinks or flashes red | Charger error: no communication with the pack, wrong charger for this pack, or a fault. See charger step. |
| Giant EnergyPak Smart: LEDs sweep when connected to the Smart charger, then charging starts | Normal wake-up; the Smart charger negotiates with the pack. A sweep that never settles means the pack is not recognised. |
| Pack LEDs normal, display shows a battery symbol with a line through it or 'Er' plus a number | Communication fault between pack and drive unit: contacts, key switch, or an unrecognised pack. |
Step by step
Turn on the bike. Yamaha displays show 'Er' with a number (for example Er-1x for battery communication); Giant RideControl shows a battery icon fault or an error number in the RideControl app. Note what it says and whether the pack LEDs work.
If OK: No error, or the bike does not power on at all: go to step 2.
If not: A battery communication error with a pack that shows LEDs: go to step 5. A temperature error: go to step 4.
Unlock and remove the pack. Press its button for 1 second.
If OK: LEDs light: the pack is awake. Go to step 5.
If not: No LEDs: go to step 3.
Plug the charger into a good socket with nothing attached and check its LED. Confirm it is the right charger: Yamaha packs and Giant EnergyPaks have different plugs and different charge negotiation; an EnergyPak Smart on the old Giant charger charges slowly or not at all, and Yamaha packs will not talk to a Giant charger. Connect and watch for 5 minutes.
If OK: Charger LED steady and the pack LEDs begin their sequence: charge fully, then go to step 6.
If not: Charger LED dead on a good socket: charger fault. Charger LED blinking: go to step 4.
Bring the pack to room temperature for 2 hours. Reconnect the charger and leave it 1 hour undisturbed. Both Yamaha and Giant BMS boards can take 30 to 60 minutes to wake from deep-discharge.
If OK: Charging starts: cold or deep-discharged, now recovered. Charge to full and run the health test flow after three cycles.
If not: Nothing after 2 hours, or the blink-together error pattern: BMS lock-out. See verdicts.
Clean the contacts on the pack and on the frame with a dry cloth. Check the key: on many Giant frames the key must be removed or turned fully to the ride position before the pack is live. Refit the pack; on downtube EnergyPaks push until you hear the lock click, on rack packs slide it fully home. Power on and wiggle the pack.
If OK: Bike powers on and stays on when wiggled: contact or key. Ride and watch for the error to return.
If not: Powers on but drops out when wiggled: mount contacts or the cable to the drive unit, dealer part. Stays dead: go to step 6.
Try a known-good pack of the same type on your bike, and your pack on another bike. Giant dealers usually have a demo EnergyPak.
If OK: Your bike works on the other pack: your pack is the fault. Your pack works elsewhere: bike side.
If not: Both fail with your pack even though it shows LEDs: the BMS output or communication has failed. Replacement.
EnergyPak Smart packs identify themselves to the drive unit; a new or second-hand Smart pack on a bike with old drive-unit firmware, or a non-Smart EnergyPak on a Smart-only frame, shows a battery fault although the pack is healthy. Yamaha packs similarly need matching drive unit generation (PW / PW-SE / PW-ST / PW-X / PW-X2 / PW-X3).
If OK: It is the pack the bike was sold with and firmware is current: not a recognition issue; the fault is in the pack or the contacts.
If not: Different pack or old firmware: dealer firmware update on the drive unit through the Yamaha or Giant service tool. Not a battery fault.
Giant EnergyPak Smart: RideControl app shows battery health and cycles. Yamaha and older EnergyPaks: only the dealer's Yamaha diagnostic tool reads the BMS. Compare with a range test.
If OK: Health above 70% and range test agrees: the pack is fine; your problem was contacts, charger or temperature.
If not: Health low or the tool cannot read the pack: worn cells or BMS fault. See verdicts.
What you now know for sure
- Charger fault or wrong charger: Charger LED dead on a good socket, or it blinks with every pack, or it is the wrong type for the pack (Smart pack on a non-Smart charger, Yamaha pack on a Giant charger). → Replace with the matching Yamaha or Giant charger for this pack generation.
- Temperature or deep-discharge, recovered: No LEDs at first, charging started after warming and waiting, pack reached full. → Run the health test flow. Store at 2 to 3 LEDs and top up every 3 months.
- Contact, key or mount: Bike drops out when the pack is wiggled, or the error clears after cleaning and seating the pack and turning the key fully. → Clean and refit. If it returns, a dealer replaces the mount contacts or the battery cable.
- Pack not recognised: Healthy pack (LEDs work, charges fully) but the bike reports a battery fault, after a pack swap or with mismatched firmware. → Dealer firmware update on the drive unit. Use the pack series the frame was designed for.
- BMS fault or worn cells: No LEDs after 2 hours on the correct charger at room temperature, or the blink-together error pattern, or a low health value with a poor range test. → Yamaha and Giant do not re-cell. Replacement EnergyPak or Yamaha pack under warranty (2 years) or at cost; third-party re-cell services exist for non-Smart packs.
- Bike side: Your pack works on another bike, a known-good pack does not wake yours. → Mount contacts, battery cable, display or drive unit. Follow the Yamaha/Giant display and drive flow.

Frequently asked
Why does my Giant EnergyPak Smart charge slowly on my old charger?
The Smart pack negotiates charge current with the Giant Smart charger. On the older EnergyPak charger it either falls back to a low current or refuses. That is expected behaviour, not a fault. Use the Smart charger for full speed and for the 60% storage-charge mode.
Can I use a Yamaha charger on a Giant EnergyPak, or the other way round?
No. The plugs differ, and even with an adapter the packs will not accept charge from the wrong charger because the charge negotiation is different. Use the charger the bike was sold with.
My Yamaha battery only has 4 LEDs. Is one missing?
No. Yamaha-branded packs use four LEDs at 25% each; Giant EnergyPaks use five at 20% each. Both are normal.
