Is my e-bike a Specialized Turbo or a Brose system?
Specialized Turbo motors and Brose motors come from the same factory, yet the displays, the error wording and the codes shown to the rider are not interchangeable. Picking the wrong list sends you to the wrong spare parts, the wrong torque values and the wrong diagnostic steps. This flow walks through the visible marks and the on-screen clues that decide which list applies.
What you need
- The bike with the battery fitted and powered up
- A torch to read the motor case and the frame type plate
- A phone camera to photograph the display at power-on
- The original invoice or the type plate on the head tube or motor mount
- The bike key or display unlock if fitted
LED patterns and what they mean
| Word Specialized cast or printed on the display housing | Specialized system - TCU, TCD-w or MasterMind display, use the Specialized code list |
| Word Brose cast or printed on the control panel | Brose system - numeric codes, use the Brose code list |
| TCU display at power-on: red top LED bar lit together with one or more blue LED bars | Specialized system - live error, open the Specialized app for the user action |
| TCD-w screen showing the words MOTOR ERROR, BATT ERROR or NOT FOUND | Specialized system - TCD-w display, use the Specialized code list |
| MasterMind T3, H3 or TCD showing a colour-coded message with the text Check App | Specialized system - MasterMind display, read the full message in the Specialized app |
| Control panel showing a numeric code in the range 10, 11, 12, 20, 21, 24, 25, 26 | Brose system - numeric code, use the Brose code list |
| Control panel showing a numeric code in the range 40 to 46 | Brose system - numeric code, use the Brose code list |
| Control panel showing a numeric code of 60 | Brose system - numeric code, use the Brose code list |
| Control panel showing a numeric code in the range 70 to 74 | Brose system - numeric code, use the Brose code list |
| Control panel showing a numeric code in the range 80 to 84 | Brose system - numeric code, use the Brose code list |
| Specialized Mission Control app opens and links to the bike | Specialized system - the app is the decoder for the live error |
| Word Specialized printed on the motor housing next to the Brose casting mark | Specialized system - the motor is Brose hardware but the firmware and codes are Specialized |
Step by step
Power the bike on, shine the torch on the bezel, photograph the badge and any logo cast into the plastic
If OK: If the badge says Specialized, go to the Specialized Turbo error list; if it says Brose, go to the Brose error list
If not: If the badge is missing or unreadable, move to the next step and judge from the on-screen behaviour
Note the screen type - TCU with LED bars, TCD-w with text, or MasterMind with colour blocks - and any text shown
If OK: A TCU, TCD-w or MasterMind belongs to Specialized; record what is shown before it clears
If not: If only a numeric code appears on a plain panel, the unit is a Brose control panel and you are on the Brose list
With the battery fitted and the bike still, switch on and read every word, bar or number on the display for at least thirty seconds
If OK: MOTOR ERROR, BATT ERROR, NOT FOUND or Check App confirm Specialized; a two-digit number confirms Brose
If not: If nothing is shown, the bike has no active fault - this flow is only for a live error, go back once a code appears
Crouch at the bottom bracket, clean the area with a cloth, photograph any word you find alongside the part numbers
If OK: A Specialized word on the motor confirms a Specialized system even when the Brose casting mark is also present
If not: If the motor only shows Brose and no Specialized mark, and the display is a plain numeric panel, treat it as Brose
Look on the head tube, motor mount or down tube for a sticker with model and part number, then compare to the invoice line
If OK: The invoice line should name the display and the motor system - that confirms which list to use
If not: If the plate and the invoice disagree, trust the display badge, not the bicycle brand
What you now know for sure
- Specialized Turbo with TCU, TCD-w or MasterMind: Use the Specialized error list. Codes appear as red and blue LED bars, text such as MOTOR ERROR, BATT ERROR or NOT FOUND, or colour-coded messages with Check App. The Specialized app holds the user action for each live error → Open the Specialized error code page and match the pattern you recorded, then follow the user action shown in the Specialized app
- Brose with numeric control panel: Use the Brose error list. Codes are two-digit numbers drawn from the ranges 10-12, 20-26, 40-46, 60, 70-74 and 80-84. No text and no LED bar is shown for these codes → Open the Brose error code page and match the number shown, then follow the action listed for that code
- Display unbranded or motor carries no word: No identification is possible from the visible marks alone. Treat the system as unknown until the display is opened or the dealer invoice is checked → Stop and contact the selling dealer with the frame number and a photo of the display; do not start parts replacement on guesswork

Frequently asked
Can I tell which system I have from the bicycle brand alone?
No. Bulls, Rotwild, Fantic, BH and Trek Allant have all shipped Brose motors, while Specialized ships its own firmware on the same Brose hardware. The brand badge on the bicycle does not decide the code list - the badge on the display does.
What if nothing is marked on the motor or the display?
Stop and check the invoice line for the display part number, or contact the selling dealer with the frame number. A plain numeric panel with no logo is almost always a Brose control panel, but a blank cover or a missing badge must be confirmed before any parts are ordered.
Does the model year decide the system?
No. The facts here do not tie any year range to one list, and the same frame can be sold with either display across production runs. Judge by what is printed on the display and what the screen shows at power-on, not by the year on the type plate.
