App pairing reset: Bluetooth first, then the ownership problem
Nine out of ten 'my e-bike will not connect to the app' cases are the phone, the app version or a stale pairing. The tenth is a second-hand bike that is still registered to the previous owner, and that one is not solved by any reset you can do. This flow separates the two.
What you need
- Phone OS and the brand app up to date
- Bike switched on and next to the phone (2 metres)
- Bluetooth and location permission granted to the app (Android needs location for Bluetooth scanning)
- For a used bike: the seller's contact, the frame number and the purchase receipt
Step by step
Switch the bike on. Check the display or LED for a Bluetooth symbol or menu entry; on Shimano and Yamaha/Giant the Bluetooth may need to be enabled in the display menu; on Bosch Smart System the LED Remote must be on; on VanMoof/Cowboy the bike must have battery charge.
If OK: Bluetooth is on at the bike.
If not: No Bluetooth option: your bike simply has no app (many Bosch classic Purion/Intuvia bikes, most Yamaha-branded bikes). Nothing to pair.
In the app: remove / forget the bike. In the phone's Bluetooth settings: forget every entry belonging to the bike (there may be two: the bike and the display). Force-close the app.
If OK: Clean slate.
If not: Cannot remove the bike in the app because it says it belongs to another account: jump to the ownership step.
Fully restart. On Android also toggle Bluetooth off/on after the restart; on iOS check that Bluetooth is enabled for the app in Settings › Privacy.
If OK: Ready.
If not: App has no Bluetooth permission: grant it. Android without location permission will never see the bike.
Open the app › add bike › follow the flow with the bike on and next to you. Enter the pairing code if asked: Specialized 6-digit TCU code, Shimano passkey (000000 default), Bosch confirmation on the display, Giant/Aventon on-screen confirm.
If OK: Connected. Done.
If not: Pairing code refused: wrong code (second-hand: ask the seller / dealer) or the bike is already paired to another phone nearby (switch that phone's Bluetooth off).
Once connected, install pending firmware and app updates with the battery above 50%. Old app versions drop connections after a phone OS update.
If OK: Stable connection.
If not: Still dropping: try another phone. If a second phone connects fine, it is your phone; if not, the bike's Bluetooth module (dealer).
Bosch Smart System: the bike is tied to a Bosch ID; seller removes it in Flow with the bike on, or a Bosch dealer releases it with proof of purchase. VanMoof: seller transfers in their app; support with receipt otherwise. Cowboy: seller transfers; support otherwise. Specialized: no account lock, but a System Lock PIN can only be cleared by a dealer. Giant RideControl: seller removes the bike from their account; Giant dealer otherwise. Aventon, Rad, Lectric: seller removes in app; brand support with serial number. Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang, KT: no account lock at all.
If OK: Bike released or transferred; pairing works.
If not: Seller gone: brand support or dealer with receipt and frame number. A police-registered stolen bike will be refused: that is the point of the lock.
On Bosch classic, Shimano, Yamaha, Bafang and KT bikes the bike rides fully without the app. On VanMoof and Cowboy the app is the key. On Bosch Smart System and Specialized the bike rides, but Lock/Alarm and tuning need the app.
If OK: You know whether to invest more time.
If not: App-dependent bike with a dead app service: check for third-party unlock tools (VanMoof: Bikey) and keep the bike registered to a working account.
What you now know for sure
- Phone side: A second phone pairs fine. → Update or replace the phone's Bluetooth stack; reinstall the app.
- Stale pairing: Forget-everywhere and fresh pairing fixed it. → Done.
- Bike Bluetooth module: No phone can see the bike although Bluetooth is on at the bike. → Dealer: module or display.
- Ownership lock: App says the bike belongs to someone else. → Seller transfers or dealer/support releases with proof.
- No app on this bike: Bike has no Bluetooth. → Nothing to pair; ride.

Frequently asked
Why does my e-bike app need location permission?
Android requires location permission for Bluetooth scanning. Without it the app cannot see the bike, no matter how many times you reset.
I bought a used e-bike and the app says it is registered to another user. Can I factory reset it?
No reset removes another person's registration. The seller must remove or transfer the bike in their app, or the brand's dealer/support releases it with the frame number and proof of purchase.
The app worked yesterday and not today. Reset the bike?
Restart the phone and re-pair first. A bike reset is the last thing to try, and on app-locked bikes it can make things worse.
