Brose error 83: Program sequence fault in the Brose drive

Brose Drive (S, T, C - also used by Bulls, Rotwild, Fantic, BH, Trek Allant)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

The motor controller has detected an internal error in its program sequence, meaning the drive's logic has failed a self-check rather than a hardware sensor tripping. As a result the system cuts electric assist completely, walk assist is disabled and the speed readout often freezes at zero until the error is cleared. The bike can still be pedalled home unpowered, but the drive will not respond to throttle or assistance requests.

  1. Switch the system off completely using the control panel power button and wait at least ten seconds.
  2. Switch the system back on with the same control panel button and check whether the error clears.
  3. If the code reappears, remove the battery, wait sixty seconds and refit it, then power up again.
  4. Inspect the motor-to-display and motor-to-battery connectors for moisture, bent pins or green corrosion, clean and reseat them if found.
  5. Ask an authorised Brose dealer whether a firmware update or reflash is available for your drive version.
  6. If the error returns after a full power cycle, hand the bike to an authorised Brose dealer for diagnostic, possible software reflash or motor replacement.
Go to a dealer if: A Brose dealer is needed as soon as a full power cycle does not clear the code, because the drive must be read with the Brose Service Tool and may require a firmware reflash or motor replacement.
Warranty: Program sequence faults are treated as a component fault and are normally covered within the two-year statutory warranty on the drive, whereas water ingress, crash damage and firmware tampered with by non-authorised tools are excluded.
Typical cost: Expect 40 to 90 EUR for a dealer diagnostic and software reflash, 80 to 180 EUR if a wiring or connector repair is required, and 700 to 1300 EUR if the motor itself has to be replaced.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset brose error 83 myself?

Yes in many cases. Switch the system off with the control panel button, wait ten seconds and switch it back on, and if that fails remove the battery for sixty seconds before refitting it. If the code returns straight away the drive needs the Brose Service Tool and a dealer.

Is it safe to keep riding with brose error 83?

No. The drive has shut assist down on purpose and the speed signal is unreliable, so riding with motor support is not possible and the erratic display can mask other faults. Pedalling unpowered to the nearest dealer or home is acceptable.

How much will fixing brose error 83 cost and is it under warranty?

A dealer diagnostic and software reflash typically runs 40 to 90 EUR, a wiring repair 80 to 180 EUR and a full motor replacement 700 to 1300 EUR. Inside the two-year warranty period a genuine program sequence fault is normally covered at no cost, provided there is no sign of water ingress or crash damage.
