Yamaha PW error 12: Display Unit Communication Has Stopped
The Yamaha PW drive unit has lost its data link to the display on the handlebar. As a result the motor assist cuts out, walk assist is disabled, and the screen shows no speed, battery or range information. The bike can still be pedalled by leg power alone, but without any support and without riding data. The fault is logged as code 12 and must be resolved before the system will run normally again.

Likely causes
- Display connector loose, dirty or corroded at the head unit
- Damaged display lead - chafed, kinked or crushed along the head tube or down tube
- Internal fault inside the display unit itself
- Loose or contaminated connector at the controller end of the display lead
- Water ingress into the display or one of the display lead connectors
- Fault inside the controller assembly interrupting the display data line
How to fix Yamaha PW error 12
- 1. Switch the system off, remove the battery, wait 60 seconds, then refit the battery and power on to see if the code clears.
- 2. Unclip the display from its mount and inspect the connector pins for moisture, dirt or bent contacts, then reseat the display firmly.
- 3. Trace the display lead along the head tube and frame, looking for chafing, kinks or crushed sections, especially where it passes the stem or enters the motor area.
- 4. If the controller end of the lead is reachable, unplug it and reseat it after checking the pins for corrosion or pushed-out contacts.
- 5. If a known-good display can be borrowed, fit it and power the system on to confirm whether the display itself is at fault.
- 6. If the code returns after these checks, the display unit, the lead, or the controller assembly must be replaced by an authorised Yamaha dealer using the diagnostic interface.
Warranty: A genuine communication or component fault inside the two-year manufacturer warranty is normally replaced at no cost, while water ingress, crash damage and wear-related failures are excluded.
Typical cost: Expect €80 to €180 for a replacement display, €20 to €60 for a replacement lead, or €250 to €450 for a controller assembly, plus roughly €60 to €120 of diagnostic labour.
Frequently asked
Can I reset Yamaha error 12?
The code clears only after the underlying communication fault is resolved. Power cycling with the battery removed may clear it once, but if the wiring, connector or display is the cause it returns immediately on the next power-up.
Is it safe to keep riding with error 12?
No. With the display offline the motor assist cuts out, walk assist is disabled, and you lose all speed, battery and range readings, so the bike must be pedalled home unassisted.
How much does it cost and is it covered by warranty?
If the fault is a genuine component defect inside the two-year manufacturer warranty period it is normally replaced free of charge; outside warranty, budget €80 to €450 for parts plus diagnostic labour depending on whether the display, lead or controller is at fault.
