Shimano STEPS error W232: Drive unit accessory power fault

Shimano STEPS (E5000, E6100, E7000, E8000, EP6, EP801)WarningRide with caution

The drive unit has detected an electrical abnormality on its accessory power terminal, which supplies power to lights, GPS units, or other add-ons wired into the system. As a result the motor typically switches off or refuses to provide assist until the issue clears, and any accessory drawing power from that terminal will stop working. On some displays the warning remains latched even after the accessory is unplugged.

Likely causes

How to fix Shimano STEPS error W232

  1. Stop the bike, power off the system, and remove the battery before inspecting.
  2. Disconnect the accessory from the drive unit accessory port.
  3. Inspect the accessory cable along its full length for cuts, kinks, crushed sections, or exposed wire.
  4. Check the connector pins on both sides for corrosion, dirt, or bent pins and clean or straighten as needed.
  5. Reconnect the accessory firmly, restore power, and check whether the warning clears.
  6. If W232 returns with no accessory connected, or the code persists after a clean reconnect, take the bike to an authorised Shimano dealer for drive unit diagnostics.
Go to a dealer if: An authorised Shimano dealer is needed when the warning stays on after the accessory is disconnected, because the fault is then inside the drive unit and requires bench-level diagnosis.
Warranty: A genuine drive unit fault within the typical two-year Shimano warranty period is normally covered, while water ingress, crash damage, and damage from non-genuine accessories are excluded.
Typical cost: If the accessory cable is at fault, expect €20 to €60 for a replacement harness; if the drive unit terminal itself is confirmed faulty, repairs typically run €150 to €400 depending on the STEPS model.
Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error W232?

You can clear it by powering the system fully off, disconnecting the accessory, and restarting. If the code returns without the accessory plugged in, the drive unit itself needs dealer-level diagnosis and cannot be cleared by the rider.

Is it safe to keep riding with W232?

Riding is not recommended: assist often cuts out unexpectedly, which is hazardous in traffic or on climbs. Disconnect the accessory and ride only to the nearest safe place to check.

How much will the repair cost, and is it covered by warranty?

An accessory cable replacement usually costs €20 to €60, while a drive unit repair confirmed under warranty is normally free apart from labour. Damage from third-party accessories or water is almost never covered.
