The system has logged an internal abnormality inside the drive unit and disables motor support as a protective measure. When E609 appears, pedal assist and walk assist switch off and the bike rides like an unpowered bicycle, with the speed reading typically dropping to zero. The display, lights and electronic Di2 shifting usually keep working because they are powered separately from the battery.

Frequently asked

Can I reset shimano error E609?

Yes - switch the system off at the battery power button, wait about ten seconds, then turn it back on. If E609 returns immediately or after a short ride, the fault is stored and a dealer reset with E-Tube is needed.

Is it safe to keep riding with E609?

No. Motor assist is disabled, so the bike becomes an unpowered 20-plus kg load, especially on hills. Brakes and lights still work, but get the fault cleared before relying on the bike for regular trips.

How much will the repair cost and is it covered by warranty?

Out of warranty, expect 400-900 EUR for the drive unit plus labour. Within two years of purchase, a genuine internal fault is normally covered by Shimano, but water damage or crash damage is usually not.
