Yamaha PW / Giant EnergyPak charger LED meanings and not-charging flow
Yamaha-built drive systems, sold as Yamaha PW-series and as Giant SyncDrive with EnergyPak batteries, share the same charger logic: a single charger LED that blinks fault patterns and a battery gauge that must animate. This flow separates charger, EnergyPak and frame port.
What you need
- The Yamaha or Giant charger (2 A standard, 4 A Giant Smart Charger, or 6 A Giant Smart Charger for EnergyPak Plus systems); the label shows the model
- The EnergyPak, removed from the frame if it is a removable pack
- A known-good wall socket
- Giant RideControl app for Giant bikes with a SyncDrive controller, optional
LED patterns and what they mean
| Charger LED off, mains connected, no battery | Normal on the 2 A Yamaha charger. Giant Smart Chargers show a steady light at standby; if dark, the charger has no mains or has failed. |
| Charger LED steady red | Charging. Battery gauge LEDs light one by one. |
| Charger LED steady green | Charge complete, or battery not detected. Battery gauge tells which. |
| Charger LED blinking red | Error: battery temperature out of range (most common), charge timeout, or battery communication fault. |
| Charger LED alternating red/green | Battery voltage outside the accepted window, or a BMS fault. Retry once after unplugging both ends. |
| Giant Smart Charger: 60% / 80% / 100% indicators | Selected charge limit. The charger stops on purpose at the chosen level; not a fault. |
| Battery gauge flashing all LEDs | Battery protection or temperature lockout. On the bike this matches a battery error on the display. |
Step by step
Lamp test the socket; push the mains lead home into the charger.
If OK: Go to step 2.
If not: Socket or lead.
On Giant Smart Chargers a button selects 60, 80 or 100 percent. Riders bump it. Set it to 100 for this test.
If OK: Set to 100, still not full: go to step 3.
If not: It was on 60 or 80: that explains 'stops early'. Nothing broken.
Remove the EnergyPak. Plug the charger into the pack's own socket (under a cap on the end or side). Watch charger LED and gauge.
If OK: Charges off-bike: charger and pack are fine. Frame port problem: go to step 7.
If not: Nothing off-bike: go to step 4.
Blinking red on the charger with a cold or warm pack is temperature lockout. Give the pack two hours indoors.
If OK: Room temperature, still blinking: go to step 5.
If not: Charges after warming: nothing broken.
Off the charger, press the gauge button.
If OK: Gauge lights: pack is awake, so a charger that shows green or blinks is the suspect. Go to step 6.
If not: Gauge dead: deep discharge or BMS latch. 30-60 minutes on the charger, retry. Still dead: verdict battery.
Any Giant or Yamaha dealer will plug your pack into a shop charger. Same plug family only.
If OK: Charges: your charger is dead. Verdict: charger.
If not: Same fault: verdict battery. Dealer reads it with the Yamaha or Giant diagnostic tool.
Inspect the frame charge port for bent pins, water, corrosion; look at the small harness behind it to the battery cradle.
If OK: Clean: reseat the plug firmly; some ports need the bike switched off first.
If not: Damaged: verdict bike. Dealer replaces the port or harness.
Fit the pack, power on. Yamaha displays show a wrench plus number; Giant RideControl shows a battery error text.
If OK: No error, no charge: BMS charge path. Verdict: battery.
If not: Battery error present: verdict battery. Take the code to the dealer.
What you now know for sure
- Charger: Pack charges on a shop charger, not yours. → Replace with the matching Yamaha or Giant charger. A Giant Smart Charger 4 A is the sensible replacement on most Giant and Liv bikes.
- EnergyPak or Yamaha battery: Refuses charge on a good charger or shows a battery error. → Dealer diagnostic readout. Giant packs have a decent warranty record; get the cell-group report.
- Frame charge port: Charges off-bike, not on-bike. → Port or harness replacement at the dealer.
- Charge limit or temperature: Smart Charger set to 60/80 percent, or pack outside its temperature window. → Set to 100 percent or wait for room temperature. Nothing to repair.

Frequently asked
My Giant Smart Charger stops at 80 percent. Is the battery failing?
Check the button on the charger first: it has 60, 80 and 100 percent settings, and 80 is the recommended daily setting for cell life. Set 100 before a long ride. If it stops early on the 100 setting, follow the 'charging stops early' flow.
Can a Yamaha charger charge a Giant EnergyPak?
Only where the plug matches and the pack is from the same Yamaha-built generation. Giant's Smart Chargers are the safe choice on Giant bikes; a mismatched plug means the pack is not compatible, do not adapt it.
The charger LED blinks red as soon as I connect the pack. What is it?
Most often temperature: the pack is too cold or warm. Second most often a pack that has fallen below its minimum voltage. Warm it up, give it 30 minutes on the charger, then retry. A persistent blink with a warm, awake pack is a charger or BMS fault; the swap test in step 6 decides.
