Bosch error 0x504002: Tampering With Speed Signal Detected

Bosch eBike (DiagnosticTool / eBike Flow hex code)Dealer neededDo not keep riding

Bosch has flagged the wheel speed signal as inconsistent or manipulated, so the controller limits motor support as a safety response. On the road the rider feels assist drop sharply, often to a walking-pace level or off entirely, with the displayed code shown or stored in the diagnostic log. This is a deliberate Bosch reaction rather than a random sensor glitch and must be investigated before normal use resumes.

Likely causes

How to fix Bosch error 0x504002

  1. Switch off the system, remove the battery, and locate the spoke magnet on the rear wheel.
  2. Confirm the magnet sits roughly 5 to 20 mm from the speed sensor body and lines up with the sensor mark.
  3. If the magnet has shifted, slide it back into position, tighten the grub screw, or replace a loose-fitting magnet with the correct Bosch part.
  4. Check that the wheel circumference set in the Bosch display or eBike Flow app matches the wheel actually fitted and correct it if not.
  5. Remove any aftermarket tuning device from the sensor cable or motor lead before reconnecting the battery.
  6. Re-fit the battery, switch the system on, and ride a short distance so the controller can re-read a clean speed signal.
  7. If the code comes back straight away, book the bike in with a Bosch service dealer for a full diagnostic check.
Go to a dealer if: Take the bike to a Bosch dealer if the code returns after the magnet, wheel size and any tuning device have been checked, because the controller is reporting a persistent signal fault that needs dealer-level diagnostics and possible sensor or wiring replacement.
Warranty: Tampering-related faults are not covered under the Bosch two-year warranty, but if a genuine sensor, magnet or wiring failure is confirmed with no aftermarket device fitted, Bosch normally covers the repair or replacement parts.

Still stuck? Take a photo of the display and show it to a local e-bike workshop. Bring the bike's system name (e.g. Bosch Performance Line CX) and the exact code; that saves diagnostic time and money.

Frequently asked

Can I reset Bosch error 0x504002?

There is no manual reset button for this code, and it will only clear once the controller sees a clean speed signal on the next ride. If the underlying cause is still present the fault returns immediately and the rider needs to find and fix the real trigger.

Is it safe to keep riding with 0x504002?

Bosch cuts motor support as a safety measure, so the bike will effectively ride without assist or at very low assist, which is fine for a short trip home. For any longer ride, commute or loaded trip, get the fault diagnosed first because assist can drop without warning.

Will Bosch cover the repair under warranty?

If the bike is within two years of purchase and no tuning chip, magnet spacer or signal modification is found, Bosch usually covers the faulty sensor, magnet or wiring as a genuine component defect. Any sign of aftermarket intervention removes warranty cover and the owner pays for parts and labour.
