Which drive system does my Liv e-bike use?
Liv e-bikes use the same SyncDrive motor system as Giant and Momentum, co-developed with Yamaha. The Liv badge on the frame does not decide which error codes your bike can produce; the specific motor hardware, display, controller firmware and battery generation do. Codes are written by the drive system, not by the brand label on the down tube. Before chasing a fault, confirm exactly which SyncDrive generation and which RideControl display are fitted, then read the matching code page here.
How to check on your own bike
- Read the text printed on the motor housing, normally near the bottom bracket or in the rear hub, and note the SyncDrive model name and any part number.
- Check which display is fitted to the bar: RideControl series, RideControl EVO, or a third-party unit, and write down the model printed on the back of the display.
- Power the bike on and see which mobile app it pairs with, noting the app name and the firmware version shown in its settings menu.
- Read the type plate or frame decal and record the manufacturer, model name, component group and any EPAC or EN classification listed.
- Cross-check the motor name, display model and type plate wording against the invoice or original paperwork from the dealer.
- Compare what you have written with the SyncDrive generation table on this site to lock in which code list applies to your bike.
Frequently asked
Which motor does Liv use?
Liv e-bikes are fitted with the SyncDrive motor system that Giant describes as shared across Giant, Liv and Momentum models and co-developed with Yamaha. The exact generation (for example SyncDrive Core, Sport, Pro or Life) depends on the bike you own, and the generation decides which error codes apply.
Why does the Liv badge on the frame not decide my error code?
The Liv label is a brand and frame identifier only. Diagnostic codes are generated inside the motor controller, the display and the battery management system, so two Liv bikes with different SyncDrive generations or different firmware versions will not share a code list.
Where can I find the system version on a Liv e-bike?
The system version is shown in the RideControl display menu under Settings or System Info, and again in the paired mobile app under About or Device. It is also recorded on the motor housing, the display rear label and the bike's type plate.
